About Frogfishes in Subtropical Australia

Sub-temperate Australia: zone with annual water temperatures 12°-16°C. Summer temperatures up to 22 to 24°C possible

Several very remarkable frogfish species live in Subtropical Australia (the Great Australian Bight between Perth and Melbourne), most of them are endemic (=only exist in this area and nowhere else). Why these different species? Endemic species appear when they are separated and isolated from species related to them (for example on islands like the Galapagos). During the Pleistocene ice age sea levels fell and the supercontinent Sahul was formed with land bridging the gap between Australia and Tasmania (see animation) and thus isolating the area to the west.

Im Subtropischen Australien (in der Grossen Australischen Bucht in etwa zwischen Perth und Melbourne) leben einige sehr aussergewöhnliche Anglerfisch-Arten, welche praktisch alle endemisch sind (=kommen nur hier vor). Weshalb diese verschiedenen Arten? Endemische Arten bilden sich vor allem dort, wo sie geografisch von andern mit ihnen verwandten Arten getrennt werden (etwa auf Inseln - siehe Galapagos). In den Eiszeiten als sich der Superkontinent Sahul bildete wurde das Gebiet im Osten durch eine Landbrücke welche neu Australien mit Tasmanien verband (siehe Animation) isoliert.
