Antennarius commerson (Giant frogfish) is one
of the largest frogfishes (30 cm) and well known to scientists
and easily found by divers. But because of the perfect camouflage
and the many different colours it is still often very difficult
to discover. Specially juveniles are frequently confused with
Antennarius pictus and Antennarius maculatus ( This frogfish is found in the following dive areas I have visited: Sulawesi, Bali, Komodo, Flores in Indonesia, Bohol and Negros in the Philippines, Mabul in Borneo, the Maldives and many more dive areas. |

Antennarius commerson
(Riesen Anglerfisch) ist einer der grössten Anglerfische und
bei Wissenschaftlern und Tauchern gut bekannt. Trotz seiner Grösse
(30cm) ist wegen seiner perfekten Tarnung und den verschiedensten
Farben oft nur schwer zu erkennen. Vor allem Jungtiere werden jedoch
gerne mit dem Antennarius pictus
und dem Antennarius maculatus
verwechselt ( Dieser Anglerfisch ist in folgenden mir bekannten Tauchgebieten zu finden: Sulawesi, Bali, Komodo, Flores in Indonesien, Bohol und Negros in den Philippinen, Mabul in Borneo, die Malediven und viele andere Tauchgebiete. |
| Illicium
and Esca: Illicium (rod) length longer than 2nd spine. Esca (lure, bait) bushy at the base but with fine long filaments. In comparison with the lenght of the rod the esca is rather small. Additional Characteristics: Typically the second and third dorsal spine is thick and bulb-like. Sometimes covered with wart-like swellings (but nothing like warts of A. maculatus). More Information: Antennarius commerson (Giant frogfish) is the largest frogfish in the Pacific and thus relatively easily identified. Video Belongs to the Antennarius pictus group (

Illicium
und Esca: Illicium (Angel, Rute) länger als 2. Stachelstrahl, Esca (Köder) unten buschig aber mit länglichen feinen Filamenten. Im Verhältnis zur Länge der Angel ist der Köder eher klein. Weitere Merkmale: Typischerweise ist die zweite und dritte Rückenflosse sehr dick und knollenartig. Teilweise mit nicht sehr ausgeprägten warzenähnlichen Schwellungen bedeckt. Zusatzinformationen: Antennarius commerson (Riesen Anglerfisch) ist der grösste Anglerfisch im pazifischen Raum und deshalb meist gut zu erkennen. Video Gehört zur Antennarius pictus Gruppe (

| Coral reefs, lagoons and seaward
reefs down to 30m depth.
This frogfish usually perches on large sponges. Having changed its skin color to the same hue as the sponge it is perfectly camouflaged and nearly not visible. It seems to like exposed areas where there is also some current. Also sometimes found on sand if there are some large sponges growing there or on ropes and under jetties. |
