Histiophryne cryptacanthus (Verborgener Anglerfisch) ist recht
weit verbreitet, aber da er sehr klein ist und verborgen lebt
wird er nur selten von Tauchern gesehen. Dieser Anglerfisch ist in den folgenden Tauchgebieten zu finden: Im Süden von Australien, zum Beispiel in Edithburgh, Mac Donnel Sound, kommt aber auch in Südost Asien vor. Es gibt noch andere Anglerfische, die sehr ähnlich aussehen (Histiophryne bougainvilli und Histiophryne sp) |

It would be interesting to know, if this frogfish shows a similar behavior to another nearly rodless frogfish, Histiophryne psychedelica, which blocks off the entrance to holes or crevices and thus entraps its prey inside. Can be confused with: Histiophryne cryptacanthus (Cryptic or Rodless Frogfish) can easily be confused with Histiophryne bougainvilli, the only obvious difference is the length of the illicium. Histiophryne cryptacanthus has a longer illicium. Another species of Histiophryne was found in Queensland. This species has a slightly larger esca: Histiophryne maggiewalker |

Interessant wäre, ob dieser Anglerfisch ein ähnliches Jagdverhalten zeigt, wie ein anderer Anglerfisch, Histiophryne psychedelica, welcher ebenfalls fast keine Angel hat und welcher seine Beute fängt, indem er mit seinem Körper den Ausgang eines Loches blockiert und so die Beute einschliesst. Wird verwechselt mit: Histiophryne cryptacanthus (Verborgener Anglerfisch) kann von Histiophryne bougainvilli fast nicht unterschieden werden. Der einzige offensichtliche Unterschied ist die Länge der Angel - Histiophryne cryptacanthus hat ein längeres Illicium. Eine weitere Histiophryne-Art wurde in Queensland entdeckt. Skin color very different from light pink to cream, white with some greenish blotches. Some have small orange to brown close-set ocelli with a white margin all over their body (see further down). This frogfish also shows a variation with a honeycomb pattern (see separate page). Frogfishes with this pattern might to be a different species. The honeycomb pattern looks like the patterns on stony corals and formed by tunicates. |
Hautfarbe sehr unterschiedlich, von hellrosa zu beige, weiss mit grünlichen Flecken. Einige haben orange bis braune Ocelli, die mit einem weissen Rand umrahmt sind (siehe weiter unten). Eine weitere Farbvariation (siehe separate Seite) sieht wie ein Wabenmuster aus. Dies könnte sich möglicherweise als eine separate Art von Histiophryne herausstellen. Dieses Wabenmuster sieht aus wie die Muster der Steinkorallen oder von Seescheiden. |

West-Pazifik (fishbase), Taiwan, Indonesien und Philippinen (= Südost-Asien) bis Subtropisches Australien ohne Tasmanien. Wird selten gefunden.

| The juvenile form of Histiophryne cryptacanthus has green spots and green blotches behind the legs and when it opens its mouth it looks like a tunicate (Didemnum molle). This frogfish has been found on coral rubble with sea squirts (see Videos No1 / No2 - large files!). But the patterns of the skin look also like the structures on hard coral. |

Die juvenile Form von Histiophryne cryptacanthus hat kleine grüne Flecken und grüne Stellen hinter dem Bein. Bei geöffnetem Maul sieht er wie eine Seescheide (Didemnum molle) aus. Dieser Anglerfisch wurde auf Korallenschotter mit Seescheiden gefunden (siehe Video Nr.1 / Nr.2 - grosse Dateien!). Aber die Hautzeichnungen sehen auch aus wie die Strukturen der Hartkorallen. |
