| Illicium
and Esca: Illicium (rod) long. Large complex esca (lure, bait). Additional Characteristics: Rows of 2 to 4 nearly transparent ocelli (eye spots) on the membrane between the spines of the caudal fin. Special Behavior: The male of this frogfish looks after the eggs which are attached to his side just below the dorsal fin with threads (see photo above and this photo). Such a egg cluster may contain up to 650 spherical eggs of about 3mm diameter. Each egg has a thread-like extension forming a loop to attach to the surface of the fish. The hatchlings are well developed, like a miniature version of the adult. (Reference p. 359). Illicium
und Esca: Illicium (Angel, Rute) lang. Grosse gut ausgepägte Esca (Köder). Weitere Merkmale: Viele fast durchsichtige Ocelli (Augenflecken) jeweils in Reihen von 2 bis 4 auf der Membrane zwischen den Schwanzstachelstrahlen angeordnet. Besonderes Verhalten: Das Anglerfisch-Männchen brütet die Eier aus, die auf seiner Seite gerade unterhalb der Rückenflosse mit Fäden angemacht sind (siehe Foto oben und dieses Foto). Eine Eiermasse kann etwa 650 kugelförmige Eier enthalten, die etwa 3mm Durchmesser haben. Jedes Ei hat einen Faden, der eine Schleife bildet, welche hilft, an der Haut zu haften. Die Jungtiere sind schon gut entwickelt, eigentlich eine Miniatur-Version eines erwachsenene Tieres. (Pietsch & Grobecker S. 359).
