There seem to be several very small frogfish species that haven't been described yet (see Sydney frogfish and Lembeh frogfish). Just recently a new species found in Ambon was identified and scientifically described (see Histiophryne psychedelica).

On this page are photos of three more so far undescribed species that might possibly also be of the genus Histiophryne, since they are very small and lack a distinct lure. What seems to be similar in all these frogfishes is, that they seem to imitate corals or tunicates with patterns on their skin. The photos are from Papua New Guinea, Taiwan and Indonesia (Southeast Asia).

Characteristics - Histiophryne sp. - Merkmale

Illicium and Esca:
Characteristic of all frogfishes of the genus Histiophryne is the very small illicium (rod) and tiny esca, nearly always hidden in a groove which lies about on the midline of snout anterior to eyes. Esca (lure, bait) very small.
Additional Characteristics:
The second and third dorsal spines are bound down to the head by skin, so only low protuberances can be made out.
Special Behavior:
They hide their cluster of eggs (about 120 eggs, measuring 3-4mm) in a pocket formed by the pectoral fin and the tail (see photo and reference p. 361).

Illicium und Esca:
Charakteristisch bei allen Anglerfischen der Gattung Histiophryne ist das sehr kleine Illicium (Angel, Rute) mit einer kleiner Esca (Köder), welche fast immer in einer Rille versteckt ist. Diese liegt etwa auf der Mittellinie zwischen der Schnauze und den Augen.
Weitere Merkmale:
Der zweite und dritte Rücken-Stachelstrahl sind mit Haut am Kopf befestigt, und sind nur als leichte Erhöhungen wahrnehmbar.
Besonderes Verhalten:
Die Eier (etwa 120 Stück, 3-4mm gross) werden in einer Tasche, die durch die Brustflosse und den Schwanz geformt werden versteckt (siehe Foto und Quelle S. 361).

Pietsch & Grobecker write that 38% of the examined specimens of Histiophryne cryptacanthus, have "numerous white edged, orange or reddish brown ocelli on head, body and fins", others are covered with tiny reddish-brown spots (reference p . 257).

Pietsch & Grobecker schreiben, dass 38% der von ihnen examinierten Histiophryne cryptacanthus "zahlreiche weiss umrandete, orange oder braune Ocelli auf Kopf, Körper und Flossen" aufwiesen und weitere Exemplare mit kleinen rot-braunen Flecken bedeckt waren (Quelle S. 257).

A variation with round spots, or perhaps an undescribed species of Histiophryne? On this website I use the term Histiophryne cf cryptacanthus for this color variation.

If you see this frogfish species (please don't confuse it with pink frogfishes with a bit of spots - example 1 or 2), please write to me where you found it and attach a photo if possible. This frogfish has been found in Bali, Lombok, Komodo (perhaps in Cebu and Southern Australia). I will send it on to Rachel Arnold from the University of Washington (School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences) which is interesting in any sightings of this species.
