| On this page are photos of two (possibly three) more so far undescribed species that might possibly also be of the genus Histiophryne, since they are very small and lack a distinct lure. What seems to be similar in all these frogfishes is, that they seem to imitate corals or tunicates with patterns on their skin. The photos are from Papua New Guinea and Indonesia (Southeast Asia). |

weiteren bis jetzt unbeschriebenen Arten, welche möglicherweise
ebenfalls zur Gattung Histiophryne gehören, da sie sehr klein
sind und keine sichtbare Angel haben. Was diesen Anglerfischen gemeinsam

Undescribed Frogfish (this frogfish is identified in books
as Histiophryne
cryptacanthus but looks completely different to that
species. More likely a new species. This species of Histiophryne
has a honeycomb pattern which looks like the patterns on
stony corals and formed by tunicates. |

Nicht beschriebener Anglerfisch (dieser Anglerfisch wird in Büchern als Histiophryne cryptacanthus identifiziert aber sein Aussehen ist komplett anders. Eher eine neue Art). Diese Art von Histiophryne zeigt ein Wabenmuster welches an die Muster der Steinkorallen oder von Seescheiden erinnert. |

This species is much more widespread (reference p.367) and is found in Taiwan, Papua Neu Guinea, Philippines and Australia. |
Wurde in Papua Neu Guinea gefunden (Quelle S.126 für das Foto von Rudie Kuiter). Dieses Foto wurde auch für andere Bücher verwendet, der Anglerfisch wurde dort jedoch als Histiophryne cryptacanthus bezeichnet (Quelle S.367), eine Art, welche ein grösseres Verbreitungsgebiet hat, nämlich Taiwan, Papua Neu Guinea, Philippinen bis Australien. |

| This might be a unknown juvenile form of an already described Histiophryne species, for example of Histiophryne cryptacanthus (see photo below). Another possibility is, that it is a new undescribed species of Histiophryne. |

The frogfish looks like one of the
well known sea squirts (Didemnum molle), specially with
the mouth open. This frogfish has been found on coral rubble
with sea squirts (see Videos No1
/ No2
- large files!). But the patterns of the skin look also
like the structures on hard coral. Typical is also the greenish
color on the side. |
Der Anglerfisch sieht aus wie die häufig
vorkommende Grüne Riffseescheide (Didemnum molle),
speziell bei geöffnetem Maul. Dieser Anglerfisch wurde
auf Korallenschotter mit Seescheiden gefunden (siehe Video
Nr.1
/ Nr.2
- grosse Dateien!). Aber die Hautzeichnungen sehen auch
aus wie die Strukturen der Hartkorallen. Typisch ist die
grüne Färbung an der Seite. |

| Pietsch & Grobecker write that 38% of the examined specimens of Histiophryne cryptacanthus, have "numerous white edged, orange or reddish brown ocelli on head, body and fins", others are covered with tiny reddish-brown spots (reference p . 257). |

This frogfish was found by Vincent Chalias at an exporter for exotic fishes
in Bali. If the frogfish was originally caught in Bali is not (yet) clear.
Dieser Anglerfisch wurde von Vincent Chalias bei einem Fisch-Exporteur
in Bali gefunden. Ob er ursprünglich auch dort gefangen wurde ist
(noch) nicht klar.

A similar looking frogfish from South Australia, looks
like a paler version of the frogfish above and without the "beard".
It is identified as Histiophryne cf cryptacanthus in some books (reference
p 126).
Ein ähnlich aussehender Anglerfisch aus Süd-Australien, welcher
eine blasere Version des Anglerfisches sein könnte, aber ohne den
"Bart". Wird in einigen Büchern als Histiophryne cf cryptacanthus
identifiziert (Quelle S.126).
