Characteristics - Antennarius sp. - Merkmale

Illicium
and Esca:
Illicium (rod) is slighly smaller than the second spine and the
esca (lure, bait) small and round with short filaments.
Additional Characteristics:
The third spine is triangularly shaped. Video.
On the dorsal fin is a large pale edged ocellus, sometimes a second
one (see photo beneath). On the tail there is a row of whitish skinflaps.

Illicium
und Esca:
Illicium (Angel, Rute) ist etwas kleiner als der zweite Flossenstrahl,
die Esca (Köder) klein und rund mit kurzen Filamenten.
Weitere Merkmale:
Der dritte Flossenstrahl ist dreieckig. Video.
Auf der Rückenflosse ist ein ausgeprägter hell umrandeter
Ocellus, manchmal auch ein zweiter (siehe Fotos unten). Auf dem
Schwanz befindet sich eine Reihe von weisslichen Hautfetzen.

it could be a juvenile of a known frogfish-species, but
I couldn't find any references or pictures.

A similar looking frogfish
was identified as A.
biocellatus in Scott W. Michael's fishbook
(but other photos of this species - for example in fishbase
- seem to show a very different looking frogfish). The lure
as described in Pietsch
/ Grobecker (p. 174) doesn't look like the lure as on
my photos. |

von Scott W. Michael wurde ein ähnlich aussehender
Anglerfisch als A.
biocellatus identifiziert (andere Fotos dieser Art widerlegen
jedoch meiner Meinung nach diese Identifikation). Die Esca
wie sie auf S. 174 von Pietsch
/ Grobecker abgebildet ist, sieht auch anders aus, diejenige
auf meinen Fotos. |
For a time I also considered,
that it might be A.
dorehensis, also a very small frogfish but with bands
on its tail (which I couldn't see on any of my photos) and
which is not known in red (but also in black) color. The
ocellus on the dorsal fin of this frogfish is not so large
and well visible as with the frogfish I found. |

Dann dachte ich, es könnte
A. dorehensis
sein, dieser hat jedoch meistens eine gebänderte Schwanzflosse
(die ich auf den Fotos nicht feststellen konnte) und ist
nicht in roter (jedoch auch in schwarzer Färbung) bekannt.
Der Ocellus auf der Rückenflosse ist ausserdem nicht
so ausgeprägt wie bei den von mir gefundenen Anglerfischen.

Then I found a similar
looking frogfish in a new book
by G. Allen and R. Steene's Reef fish
Identification book that had also puzzled them. They
called it "Ocellated frogfish" and listed it as
"Unidentified, possibly undescribed species" so
far only found in Lembeh. This frogfish is black with a
large yellow-edged ocellus on its dorsal fin. |

Dann fand ich die Abbildung
eines Anglerfisches im neuen Buch
von G. Allen und R. Steene (Reef fish
Identification). Dieser Anglerfisch ist schwarz mit
einem ausgeprägten gelb umrandeten Ocellus auf der
Rückenflosse und wird als noch nicht identifizierter
und vielleicht neue unbekannte Art beschrieben, die vorläufig
nur in der Lembeh Strasse gefunden wurde. |
I think, the frogfishes
I found are probably the same species. I have found not
only in black but also in brick red and in brown-violet.
There are now also photos of this species taken in Bali,
Alor and the Philippines (see below). |

Ich denke, dass die von
mir gefundenen Anglerfische auch diese Art sein könnten.
Ausser in schwarz habe ich sie schon in rot und braun-violett
gefunden. Inzwischen sind mir Fotos dieser Art auch von
Bali, Alor und den Philippinen bekannt (siehe weiter unten). |

The frogfish was luring for small fishes like cardinal fishes
living between the sea urchins. To the left is also a pufferfish
that he was pursuing.
Dieser Anglerfisch lauerte auf die kleinen Kardinalfische, die
zwischen den Seeigeln leben. Links ist auch ein kleiner Kugelfisch
zu sehen, dem er nachstellte.

A large and a small ocellus - ein grosser und ein
kleinerer Ocellus

2009: Variation
from Bali
- very small (less than 1cm) with a white stripe starting with the
second dorsal spine, continuing over the head and extending to the
mouth and to the chin. Lure and esca not visible. Small dorsal ocellus.
I am not sure if it is also the same species, it could also be a
baby of some other species or another undescribed frogfish species!
Underneath two examples with a similar white dorsal spine but a
larger ocellus.
A smiliar
looking frogfish (Antennarius
pauciradiatus) but which lives in the Caribbean - also with
a white stripe!
2009: Neue Farbvariante aus Bali
- sehr klein (weniger als 1cm) mit einem weissen Streifen, der mit
dem zweiten Rückenstachel beginnt, dann über den Kopf
zum Maul und bis hinunter zum Kinn führt. Keine Angel oder
Esca sichtbar. Kleiner Rücken-Ocellus. Ich bin nicht sicher,
ob es dieselbe Art ist, es könnte auch ein Baby einer andern
Art sein oder eine neue, nicht beschriebene Anglerfisch-Art. Darunter
noch zwei Beispiele mit einem ähnlichen weissen Rückenstachel
aber mit einem grösseren Ocellus.
Ein ähnlich
aussehender Anglerfisch (Antennarius
pauciradiatus), welcher aber in der Karibik lebt - auch mit
einem weissen Streifen!
